What treatments did you undergo during your journey? Chemotherapy, Surgery, Radiation, and Immuno Therapy
What were your signs/symptoms leading up to your diagnosis? Sudden Inflammation, fullness and redness within 1-2 weeks
How did cancer alter your lifestyle? It was definitely a time to be still in every way. I knew it could be mentally overwhelming if I did nonstop research so I did NOT look up every single detail. Physically I had to slow down. Especially during treatments, surgery, and radiation. Wigs were now in the picture and my wardrobe changed to soft and comfy attire with elastic around the waist instead of zippers or buttons. I noticed my emotions were mostly suppressed before cancer. During this journey I feel that I was able to cry and learned that it is ok to cry and it’s actually good for the body! I have grown to know more about our Creator and have a relationship with Him.. This part of my journey is indescribable.
What kept/keeps you going? Knowing God is with me keeps me going!
Along with the challenges came many blessings from God. My family and friends have been a huge support.
What makes your story unique or helpful to others? Just before I was diagnosed I went for a walk. I took a picture of the North, South, East, and West. The signs I saw reminded me of the journey of life. As I looked at these pictures, the signs reminded me that sometimes there is a closed road, a detour, construction, a mess, and inconvenience. But… Something New is coming or something is being repaired. Some seasons are tough but there is Hope!
Any advice for those coming behind you? Yes! Do not be anxious about anything. Talk to God about everything. Let Him know what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience His peace that exceeds all understanding. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
This is found in the Holy Bible New Living Translation. This has become real in my life.
Do you have a funny cancer story? I woke up one morning after a very long night. I looked into the mirror and I had a few hairs on my head along with one last big hairball on the top of my head. Immediately I thought “a halo with me in all my glory or a hairball” As i swished some water with baking soda in my mouth I tapped on my hairball with my hand and it fell off. At this point I could either laugh or cry. I immediately felt God’s joy and a reminder that everything on earth is temporary, even my hair! The eternal matters are forever. The ones here on earth are definitely temporary.
Favorite quote, scripture or song? Holy Forever by Cece Winans
Product or service that changed your life? My physical therapist Emily at Spooners that specializes with breast cancer patients immediately took the cording pain away about 2 weeks after surgery. I highly recommend a PT therapist that specializes in breast cancer patients.
How did you hear about Brighter? How has it made a difference? Shortly after I was diagnosed I received this magazine in the mail. After reading the stories, the advice, and seeing resources that can help I felt very encouraged!
